So... I got an e-mail from the developers telling me that I could use the footpath on the other side, which was well meant but not the point. Obviously one has to use the footpath on the other side. The point was that there wasn't a ramp at the signposted pedestrian crossing point. However, I was also given a number for the Chap In Charge and invited to ring him up, so I did; and I explained that [John Doe], who had sent the e-mail, had rather missed the point, and summarised what the problem was.

Chap In Charge was great. He said that a) there's a ramp there now; b) he'd instructed the workers to put one in on Friday before they knocked off, but evidently they'd forgotten, so he'd have a little word about that; c) that whole stretch of pavement is going to be finished in three weeks (yay!); d) they're also currently installing what he refers to as "tables", which means the flat areas across the ends of side roads that are raised to kerb level (there are some of those in already, and they make a huge difference because I no longer have to go up and down steep ramps in those places, and I have no suspension); and e) they're going to fix the cycle path on the main road up to the school where our church meets. While I'm no longer able to cycle, I used to be an extremely enthusiastic cyclist in my younger days, so this is tremendous news. At the moment, the cycle path stops right at the most dangerous part of the road (a fairly sharp bend), which means all the children from the secondary school have to cycle on the pavement for safety's sake. I am extremely glad that they're shortly going to be able to cycle all the way up and down on a proper route.

So I am really delighted. I'd be even more delighted if my laptop wasn't currently showing all the signs of being terminally ill, but then it always was a Friday afternoon job, so I suspect I've done pretty well (with considerable assistance from my computer guru, who sold me the machine originally) to keep the thing going for as long as I have. I have e-mailed said computer guru to let them know I'd like to buy a replacement, please, and if they want this one back they can have it (if anyone is going to get any further use out of it, it'll be them). In the meantime I am slowly and painfully transferring files over onto memory sticks and making notes of what software I'm going to need to re-download. I do hate changing laptops, but there's not much to be done about that.

I'll just think about how I'll be able to get to church on Sunday with fewer bumps!
